Her previous book, Daughters of the Samurai: A Journey from East to West and Back, was a New York Times Notable book in 2015.
- Her essays and book reviews have appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, Smithsonian, The Rumpus, and LitHub, among other publications.
- Allison Gilbert is co-author of the forthcoming book Listen, World!: How the Intrepid Elsie Robinson Became America’s Most-Read Woman, the first biography of Robinson who once the most influential newspaper columnist in the United States.
- She is host “Women Journalists of 9/11: Their Stories,” a 20-part documentary series produced in collaboration with Wondrium and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. Allison is the official narrator of the 9/11 Memorial Museum’s historical exhibition audio tour, the only female journalist to be so honored.
